Slices of Time tells the story of two women, the filmmaker’s grandmothers, through whom the history and society of 20th-century Central and Southeastern Europe are revealed. Both were born in 1914, at the time of the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the creation of Yugoslavia. They lived in different cultural and religious environments and never met, yet their lives became connected through their children. They lived through the same wars, hunger, poverty, the death of children, and the collapse and creation of several states. The film is structured as “slices of time”, following the turning points of their lives and of history: Time of Life, Death, Memory, Migration, Exile, Birth, War, Poverty, Abundance, Longing, Love, Fear, Killing, Freedom, Peace, Building, Destruction, Killing, the Post-War Period, and Forgetting.
