The film Burnt in Memories focuses on the multi-ethnic border area between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia - Julian Krajina (later called Adriatisches Küstenland or the Adriatic coast). This is an area where we have seen many changes in borders and political regimes over the last 100 years. Even during World War II, one occupier (Italy) was followed by another (Germany). Although this region was officially part of Italy since 1920, the Slovene and Croatian population developed rebel movements against the regime and agitated for annexation to the "motherland" - Yugoslavia - or in some cases for the autonomy of the Julian Territory. Especially during the Second World War, there was cooperation between Slovenian and Croatian partisans and Italian rebels, while the membership of the Communist Party of Italy was already multinational in the period between the world wars. During World War II, the Nazi and Fascist occupation forces burned many villages in this border area. Burnt villages carry the symbolism of places that the occupier tried to "erase", so like the famous Oradour-sur-Glane, Lidice and Ležáky, they should be recognized as places of memory. These war crimes usually occurred as a retaliatory measure against the civilian population for supporting the rebellion - especially the partisans or NOB. Village burnings were almost always accompanied by massacres, deportations, looting and other violence. In order to revive the memory of the events, we will collect personal memories of the arsons and the response to them, as well as photographs of the villages, and based on archival sources and literature, we will create a map of burned villages in the Julian countryside.
