»Borderland fleetingness« is a film about the fleetingness and banality of a state borders that sometimes seems as an insurmountable political, psychological and physical obstacle. Despite the fall of borders in the EU, this issue is currently very relevant in Slovenia because of (already a little forgotten) wire fences on our southern border and our border dispute with Croatia.
But state borders and strict border regimes are not eternal, and we are particularly interested in what remains behind them. The film is set in two places. In a village Brezovica pri Metliki locals present the invisible Croatian-Slovenian border, which runs straight through the village. They hoped that with the arbitration agreement the border would be crossed, but that did not happen. So some locals decide to do a symbolic act together.
Despite the complications brought about by their (intentional and unintentional) constant passing borders, they decide to organize a traditinal gattering on a tourist farm, which the border has isolated into an islet between the two countries.
Parallel developments accompany the life of Miren near Nova Gorica. During the SFRJ times, Miren dealt with a highly guarded and inhuman border with Italy. The border cut the local cemetary in half (among other things) ad Miren became the most common point for defections to the West. Despite the openness of today’s border, there is still a lot of physical and humans traces it left behind. The film is a story of both transience and the banality of the border. The border does not cause Slovenians a crisis of national identity or resistance to the neighbors of another nationalities. It causes only a bunch of inconvenience and bureaucratic problems that would be
easily solvable with greater political will. From a wider picture, these issues can work irrelevant. Like the state border in Miren, the border in Brezovica is likely to soon become a part of history.
