The House of Gods is a documentary film that, with a rarely achieved closeness and respectful distance, opens the door to the life of a Roma family in Slovenia. But this is not a “Roma film” – but a story about anyone who has ever found themselves between the expectations of others and their own feelings. Mišo tries to take on the role of husband and father, while his wife Mirsada is full of expectations – also regarding religion. His mother Vladica seeks support and hope in her search for a new faith, while his father Janez remains calmly true to himself. Intergenerational and religious currents intertwine the everyday rhythm of life, where nothing is spectacular – but everything is important. With its observational approach, the film does not explain or judge. In gentle, quiet moments, it explores the issues of coexistence, growing up and inner shifts triggered by love, faith, hope and fear. Under the Holy Roof is a film about the human need for meaning, trapped between four walls – and yet understandable everywhere.
