DOKUDOC MASTERCLASS: From Short Film to Fiume o morte!

Fiume o morte! is a film that won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the European Film Award for Best Documentary, and the FIPRESCI Award for Best Documentary Film of the past year. The film was also selected for the DOKUDOC izbrani 2025 programme at our festival.
At the masterclass, director and screenwriter Igor Bezinović will discuss how his early amateur and short films shaped his cinematic style, and how these filmmaking experiences informed the distinctive approach seen in Fiume o morte!. He will also explore why the film’s success is closely connected to the traditions and practices of amateur filmmaking.

About the director
Igor Bezinović is a filmmaker born in Rijeka, which is now part of Croatia, but at that time belonged to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, before that partly the Kingdom of Italy and partly the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, before that the Free State of Fiume, before that the Italian Regency of Carnaro, before that Austria-Hungary...
His films include The Blockade (Oktavijan prize for Best Croatian Documentary 2012), Veruda
(Oktavijan prize for Best Croatian Documentary 2015) and A Brief Excursion (Big Golden Arena
prize for Best Croatian Feature 2017), along with many shorts of all shapes and sizes. His work has been shown internationally at events including IFFR, DOK Leipzig, Ji.hlava IDFF, CPH:DOX, Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, Venice Biennale of Architecture (with Hrvoslava Brkušić for Pulska grupa), Museum of the Moving Image, Guanajuato IFF and Viennale, among others. He graduated in Film Directing at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, and in Philosophy, Sociology and Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb.
