Film Review: The Mountain Won’t Move

The Šar Mountains, stretching across North Macedonia, are perhaps most widely known for the Šarplaninac, a renowned sheepdog breed. The Šarplaninac was once known as the Illyrian Shepherd, and the ancient Illyrians were, to a large extent, the ancestors of today’s Albanians. In her film "The Mountain Won’t Move", Petra Seliškar focuses on an Albanian family of young shepherds on these mountains, dedicated to this ancient and largely vanishing profession.

The significant increase in the number of Albanian workers from Kosovo and their families in Slovenia, which has taken place over the last decade, is somewhat altering the country's demographic profile, especially in certain urban centers. In accordance with the rise of global ideological tensions—resulting from the monopolization of capital and the subordination of states to international financial institutions—this shift is triggering a certain level of intolerance. In our case, this is ideologically grounded in the image of the Albanian as the "Other," which dates back to the era of Yugoslavia.
